Jazz Artists of Charleston (JAC) announces programming for its 2nd Annual JAC Week, presenting five days of diverse programming and debut concerts to celebrate the work of JAC and the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, while raising awareness and funds to keep Charleston’s jazz culture and legacy alive and thriving. In celebration of the first anniversary of the debut of the CJO Chamber Ensemble and the fourth anniversary of Jazz Artists of Charleston Day, as declared by Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. in 2010, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra Chamber Ensemble returns to JAC Week to present Duke Ellington's Far East Suite. The influential, nine-movement, 1966 jazz recording was written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and was inspired by the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra's world tour, especially in South-East Asia and Japan. The CJO Chamber Ensemble presents the entire work in arrangements for septet, originally performed by members of CJO in 2011 in collaboration with Charleston Ballet Theatre for the "Ellington Experience." This year, the CJO Chamber Ensemble plays the piece with all of the power and excitement intact from both that performance as well as from A Suite Holiday, when the full CJO performed it in 2009. Duke Ellington's Far East Suite is a reflection of America's profound influence on the music of the rest of the world. The CJO Chamber Ensemble plays the work with Charleston's own place in that rich musical narrative in mind.
Showtimes are at 7pm and 9:30pm. $30 each. Order tickets online via bit.ly/ZCyvfu or call (843)641-0011.
