In 1800, America's very first summit canal began it's operations. This engineering feat is the Santee Canal and it served as a very efficient means of connecting the Santee River and the Cooper River and securing Charleston as a prominent seaport. Head to Stony Landing for a blast from the past as you tour the Old Santee Canal Park. Tour the planation house that was built circa 1883 by Charleston merchant John Dawson and observe alligators, turtles, wading, and nesting birds on a guided nature hike through Biggin' Swamp. Don't miss this chance to enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the history and significance of this city as a seaport.
