Event Details

This month, on a single wall in Martin Gallery, 64 canvases will hang side by side in a quilt-like collage of still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. The eight-inch square works, created by the gallery’s eight artists-in-residence, encompass talent from Montreal to the Lowcountry. Inspiration for this dynamic show came from gallery director Kit Coleman’s college thesis, in which she challenged herself to make a grid of 100 five-inch square paintings in 100 days. She believes the juxtaposition of the diverse paintings urges viewers to value not only the individual works but also the collection as a whole. “This exhibition format,” she says, “creates a visual feast for the eyes.” Part of the French Quarter Gallery Association Art Walk on December 3, the one-of-a-kind group exhibition also includes an artists’ reception on Thursday, December 9 at 5 p.m.

“Eight by Eight” group show. Martin Gallery, 18 Broad St. December 3-31, Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. (843) 723-7378, www.martingallerycharleston.com
