If you happen to pass down Nassau Street, keep your eyes open for a one-storied home with a side piazza and gabled roof, number 227. Architecturally unique to Charleston and sometimes called “freedman’s cottages,” houses such as this date back to the mid- to late-19th century and were built by freed slaves. The Preservation Society of Charleston presents a lecture on the history of these buildings and their current state, as well as the Charleston Vernacular Revolving Fund, which helps save endangered sites.
