150th Anniversary of the Battery Wagner Assault
The battle that took place locally on Morris Island was a history making event on two important levels. One, if Battery Wagner were to fall, Union troops would be ever closer to capturing Charleston, the cradle of secession. And two, the battle featured the deployment of an all African regiment to lead the assault. To commemorate the 150th Anniversary, a memorial service/living history presentation will take place on July 18, 2013 (the actual date of the battle). This event is being supported by the National Park Service and other organizations. It will take place at Fort Moultrie and Morris Island.
