Remember that scene in Steel Magnolias where bride-to-be Shelby turned to her mother and declared, “my colors are blush and bashful?” Well, Amy and Jonathan’s whimsical Lowndes Grove wedding reminds me of it. Both weddings—one factual, one fictitious —had dainty pink palettes, but thankfully, Amy did not follow Shelby’s lead and serve a groom’s cake in the shape of an armadillo.
The wedding planning began after Jonathan popped the question while the pair picnicked on the Bolinas Ridge near the San Francisco Bay. The California residents picked the Lowcountry as their wedding locale (as Amy had fallen in love with it during her student years at College of Charleston). They sought Heather Barrie of gathering—floral + event design to turn Lowndes Grove into Amy’s “romantic, warm, moody, and magical” vision.
Designing around hot and pale pink, chocolate brown, and turquoise, gathering hung large bronze lanterns from live oak branches, draped the reception tent in swags of fabric, and added crocheted pendants for a bohemian edge. Arrangements of dahlias, peonies, and roses covered the linen tabletops as guests indulged in a three course sit-down dinner of beef tenderloin and local greens.
My favorite part? Amy managed to keep her gorgeous blush Monique Lhuillier gown a secret from everyone—including her mom and sister—until her Big Day. “It was fun having that little element of surprise,” she says.
