Model Rehearsal & Sneak Peek
Inside the tents one day before Charleston Fashion Week 2010 officially begins
If you happened to be walking down King Street yesterday evening, you were likely drawn to the beats flowing out of the tents at Marion Square. Had you peeked in the main tent, you would have caught your first glimpse of official runway action for Charleston Fashion Week 2010. The set up is totally different from last year’s CFW... but you’ll have to take my word for it until the doors open in a few short hours!
This year’s layout has been streamlined to create a sleeker space with more breathing room for the models, guests, and ever-competitive pit photographers. The runway is longer and flanked by video screens that feature a multimedia experience synched with the beats to create a much more glamorous and dramatic stage for this year’s looks. But wait, where’s the DJ? you may ask. Oh, he’s rocking out on a balcony suspended over the runway. And to those of us who are technologically challenged, this station could be best described as “mind-blowing.” DJ Sonar actually let me control the video feed for a bit under his supervision, jealous?!
During last night’s rehearsal, I checked out the scene backstage, and the models’ energy was infectious! Returning models mingled while a few rookies practiced their walks, but everyone was eagerly awaiting their turn on the catwalk in hopes of becoming a finalist in the Rock the Runway competition.
The rehearsal began to wind down, and Rock the Runway panel Ayoka Lucas, Ashley Brook Perryman, and Michelle Wood announced the finalists. Congratulations to all the men and women who are going on in the strut their stuff on Thursday night! “This competition gave them something to really strive for, and each and every model did amazing,” declared runway coach Michelle Wood.
I caught up briefly with female finalists Rebecca Dupree and Rouge Apker after their portrait session with King Street Studio. “I’m really flattered,” said Rebecca. When asked what she thinks about on the runway, Rebecca responded without hesitation, “Trying not to look too crazy-faced. When I get nervous my face twitches! So trying not too look too wonky.” Fellow finalist Rouge Apker was beyond excited to make the cut. She’s most looking forward to seeing tonight’s Emerging Designer Competition, but Rogue adds, “I’m just really excited to see all the shows. It’s such an honor to walk for them.”
On the men’s side, CFW newbie Chris Horton was shocked to be named a finalist. “I had no idea!” This is his first time modeling, so I had to ask what goes through his mind on the catwalk. “Don’t fall, be fierce, smile with your eyes!” I suspect we’ve got an America’s Next Top Model fan on our hands!
How will the competition play out? Will the Rock the Runway grand prize go to a CFW veteran or a fresh face? You’ll have to wait until Thursday to find out, but fortunately there are plenty of fashion-forward shows, chic looks, glamorous events, and Emerging Designer debuts to keep the anticipation at bay.
