Hair & Makeup FAQ

#1. How do I apply and what qualifications must applicants possess in order to be considered for the Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week® 2014 Hair & Makeup team?

First, applicants must read this FAQ thoroughly; you will then be directed to complete an online application in 3 easy steps:

  1. Fill out and complete the application
  2. Upload portfolio images; Images must meet the portfolio guidelines
  3. Submit your application

[NOTE: Partial information does not save to the Charleston Fashion Week® system. Only after a stylist or artist has clicked the SUBMIT button at the end of the application will complete submissions be made. Applicants are encouraged to save and back up information.] 

Applications must be submitted by Friday, November 1, 2013 at 11 p.m. EST.


Hair stylists and makeup artists from across the Southeast are encouraged to apply. We ask that applicants have experience working in the hair/makeup industry. 


#2. How are stylists and artists selected to be a part of the CFW 2014 Hair & Makeup team?

The CFW Hair & Makeup director and judges will review all applications and select the top finalists to move onto the audition process, which will consist of a timed test, kit review, and interview questions. Please note, you are not guaranteed a spot on the team if selected for an audition.



#3. If selected to attend the audition, when and how will I be notified?

All applicants will be informed via email and/or phone the week of November 11th if they have been selected to attend the audition.  The email confirmation will include: the date and location of the audition, assigned time block, kit requirements.  Please be sure to check your email that week for your confirmation.


#4. What should I plan on bringing to the audition?

Each stylist and artist will be expected to bring his/her full kit and you will be given a kit requirement list in advance.  Please note, you will be responsible for the products you use during your audition.  No chemicals, harsh styling products, home remedies, or permanent products will be allowed.  There will be a kit review and if you fail to comply with these product guidelines, you may be disqualified.  

Tip: [You could be asked to wait, so we recommend you bring something to read, a snack, and bottled water.]


#5. What should I plan on wearing to the audition?

Please wear professional and comfortable clothing with closed toe shoes.


#6. How can I best prepare for the auditions?

You will be given two images that you will be asked to duplicate at the audition. PRACTICE! Also, be current on all hair and makeup trends. Finally, be sure to review previous Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week® photos and video footage, along with images from Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week shows from the past year.


#7. Can I bring my own model for the audition?

No, Charleston Fashion Week® will provide a model for you.


#8. I've selected that I am interested in being an assistant, will I be expected to attend the audition?

No, we will schedule a separate interview time. However, you should still complete the online application.


#9. What if I am running late for the audition?

If you are late for your scheduled time block audition, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to audition. We recommend you plan for extra travel time to ensure an on-time arrival.


#10. When will final selections be made and the 2014 Hair & Makeup team announced?

If selected to be a part of the team you will be notified by email and/or phone by December 19th. By mid February, the hair & makeup team will be announced on the CFW website.


#11. If selected to be a part of the CFW 2014 Hair & Makeup team, what time commitment requirements will there be?

Team members will be required to attend two mandatory training sessions being held on Sunday, February 23 and Monday, February 24 at the Paul Mitchell School of Charleston. Exact time to be announced. In addition, there will be two team meetings. First one will take place on Monday, March 10. Exact time and location to be announced. Second meeting will take place on Monday, March 17 from 3-5 pm at the CFW tents in Marion Square.

The week of Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week®, you will be required to be at the tents by 2:30 pm until after the last show is complete and the stations are cleaned. On Saturday, you will be required to be at the tents by 5:30 am for the Spring Bridal Show. 

 *Upon receiving your invitation to participate on the 2014 team, by confirming your spot, you are committing to all dates above.


#12. If selected to be a part of the CFW 2014 Hair & Makeup team, will there be any monetary compensation?

All team members will receive a $50 kit per diem for each day of CFW that you work.  Checks will be mailed one week following the completion of CFW 2014.


#13. Will travel to/from Charleston and accommodations in Charleston be provided if you live out of town?

If you live outside the Charleston area, you will be responsible for your travel to/from Charleston, plus any associated parking fees for auditions, all team trainings & meetings, and the week of CFW, plus any necessary hotel accommodations. CFW will provide a list of area hotel recommendations, along with any discount prices being offered to CFW participants/volunteers/staff. March is considered high season in Charleston, so we recommend booking your reservations well in advance.


#14. How many people attend Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week®?

More than 7,500 people attended CFW 2013, including buyers, store owners, model scouts, and fashion industry professionals.  Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week® attracts local, regional, and national press attention.


#15. What press coverage does Baker Motor Company Charleston Fashion Week® typically receive?

CFW 2013 generated more than 184 million media impressions through the activation and support of local and national media to include reporters, bloggers, photographers, editors and journalists. CFW 2013 press highlights include event coverage by Huffington Post, CNN, Southern Living, The Daily Front Row, and Post & Courier, etc. More than 165 credentialed media were onsite to cover and report the events of the week.
